Ishinkai sheet music
These editions of musical notation feature pieces which have been researched and mastered by Akikazu Nakamura. They include musical analyses conducted from the standpoint of a composer and a performer and have been prepared in such a way as to create the best conditions for performance.
The editions have two main features. The first is the specification of what would seem at present to be the optimal fingerings, although fingerings are left up to performers to decide for themselves in other editions of shakuhachi music. Needless to say, these fingerings are mere suggestions and should not be regarded as prescriptive. Performers are free to make adjustments as they may see fit.
The second main feature is the use of color distinction for analytical purposes.
Previous editions of komusō music have consisted merely of a row of character symbols that provide no clues to the structure of a piece or to musical meaning. In these editions the same phrase appears in the same color, thereby making the performer immediately aware of the musical structure. The notation may then be used as the basis further arrangement or variation as appropriate.
I fervently hope that extensive use will be made of these editions in order to deepen understanding and appreciation of komusō music.
